Create Media

This section of the guide explains the basics of creating media using the Studio feature within Canvas. For more information on advanced features, please visit the Canvas Studio Guide.
Note: Studio has different content creation options depending on which browser you're using. Please be mindful when selecting creation options.

Webcam Capture (Chrome/Edge)

The webcam feature can be used to record yourself for assignments such as an introduction post or speech.

Step 1

Open Canvas and select the Studio icon on the global navigation bar.

Select the + Create button in the top right corner, then select Studio Capture.

Step 3

The studio capture interface will give you multiple options for setting up your video.

  1. Webcam Selection: This feature allows you to select which camera you want to use or disable the webcam.
  2. Microphone Selection: This feature allows you to select which microphone you want to use or disable the microphone.
  3. Start Recording: Once you have selected the microphone you wish to use, select Start Recording to begin your video.

While recording, you will have options to either pause the video (1) or finish the recording (2).
Note: You must finish and save your recording before closing the Studio Capture window as your progress will not be saved otherwise.

Step 5

When you have finished recording, add a title (1) and select Save Media (3). If you don't like your video, you can start over by selecting the Start Over button (2).

Screen Capture (Chrome/Edge)

The Screen Capture feature can be used to record your computer screen for assignments such as a presentation.

Step 1

Open Canvas and select the Studio icon on the global navigation bar.

Select the + Create button in the top right corner, then select Studio Capture.

Step 3

The studio capture interface will give you multiple options for setting up your video.

  1. Webcam Selection: This feature allows you to select which camera you want to use or disable the webcam.
  2. Microphone Selection: This feature allows you to select which microphone you want to use or disable the microphone.
  3. Screen Capture: To capture your computer screen, you will need to enable this feature and select which tab you want to share.
  4. Start Recording: Once you have selected the microphone you wish to use, select Start Recording to begin your video.

A recording bar will appear in Studio that shows how long the screen has been recorded and gives options to 1. Cancel the recording, 2. Pause the recording, and 3. Finish Recording.
Note: You must finish and save your recording before closing the Studio Capture window as your progress will not be saved otherwise.

Select the + Create button in the top right corner, then select Webcam Capture.

The Webcam interface will give you multiple options for setting up your video.

  1. Webcam Selection: This feature allows you to select which camera you want to use or disable the webcam.
  2. Microphone Selection: This feature allows you to select which microphone you want to use or disable the microphone.
  3. Start Recording: Once you have selected the microphone you wish to use, select Start Recording to begin your video.

Open Canvas and select the Studio icon on the global navigation bar.

Select the + Create button in the top right corner, then select Screen Capture.

Note: You may be asked to download the screen recording software. If you are, select Download on the pop up to install the recorder. The recording interface will then appear automatically when you select Screen Capture.

Step 3

A black and white striped border will appear around your screen. You will have a few options to adjust your video settings before you start recording.

  1. Move Pane: This feature allows you to move the recording area as needed.
  2. Adjust Pane: This feature allows you to adjust the size of the area you want to record.
  3. Capture Settings: This menu allows you to select your recording type, microphone, and webcam if needed.
  4. Start Recording: Once you have adjusted the recording settings to your liking, select the red Rec button to begin your video.

Step 4

Once you start recording, the black and white border will become red and white. You can pause recording at any time to stop the recording.

A menu will appear when recording is paused. If you are finished recording, select Done.
Note: You must finish and save your recording before closing the Studio Capture window as your progress will not be saved otherwise.

Step 5

When you have finished recording, add a title and select Upload to upload the video to Studio. If you don't like your video, you can start over by selecting the Redo or Edit buttons.
