Grading Group Assignments

To create groups and assign students to them, you will first need to create Group Sets. If you plan to use the same groups throughout the entire term, you can create one group set and the appropriate number of groups within that set. If you plan to assign students to different groups for different assignments, you will create multiple group sets and then the appropriate number of groups in each set. For instance, you may want students to work together in groups on discussions, but different groups of students work together on a final project. In this case, you will create two group sets.

Assigning the same grade for the entire group

Instructors can view a group's progress and discussions by visiting the group's Home page. There are several ways to do this. We are only providing one way in this document. Go to People and choose the name of the group set. Using the 3 dots to the right of the group's name, choose Visit Group Homepage.

Grading of group assignments will take place in the Speedgrader. If the assignment is set to assign the same score to every student, instead of seeing individual student names in the drop-down, you will instead see group names. Select the group name to review the assignment, the associated rubric, or enter grades and comments for everyone in the group at the same time.

Assigning the different grades to individual students

If the assignment was set to Assign Grades to Each Student Individually or if this is a group Discussion, you will see each student listed individually in the Speedgrader and have to manually enter grades for each student as you do for other assignments. However, when grading assignments, you will have the option to send comments to this student only or send comments to the whole group.
