Create Group Sets

To create groups and assign students to them, you will first need to create Group Sets. If you plan to use the same groups throughout the entire term, you can create one group set and the appropriate number of groups within that set. If you plan to assign students to different groups for different assignments, you will create multiple group sets and then the appropriate number of groups in each set. For instance, you may want students to work together in groups on discussions, but different groups of students work together on a final project. In this case, you will create two group sets.

Once groups have been made you, as the Instructor, are resposible for updating all appropriate assignments that are related to the group set(s) being created.

Step 1

Select People

  2. Select the Group Structure that works best from below:
    1. Create groups later (Manual)
    2. Split students by number of groups
    3. Split number of students per group

Select the option you find best and select Save.

Step 4

View Group Set

Canvas 'discussions' page with a red arrow pointing towards discussion group 1

If you have chosen to have the system create groups for you, you will see each group name and will be able to select a group name to determine which students are in the group, as in the example above.

If you have chosen to manually assign students to groups, move on to Manually Create Student Groups.
