Frequently Asked Questions

What is a digital credential?

  • A digital credential (sometimes called a badge or micro-credential) is a digital representation of an accomplishment.
  • Canvas Credentials can be awarded to students for various accomplishments and then shared by students on social media and elsewhere as an indicator of their accomplishment or competence.

How can Canvas Credentials enhance teaching and learning?

  • By helping learners translate their learning outcomes into validated skills and achievements.
  • By motivating students with achievements that are easy to recognize and share.
  • By allowing instructors to recognize, validate, track, and share students' learning achievements.

How do I earn credentials?

  • You will automatically earn Canvas Credentials upon successful completion of a course or assignment that is configured to award a credential.
  • For example, Canvas Credentials will be used to award students badges upon course completion of General Education courses. This is called the General Education 'Pathway' within Badges. This is an active project that is currently being implemented.
  • Upon completion of a Pathway, a completion badge is also awarded.

What is a Pathway?

  • A learning pathway is the chosen route individuals complete as they progress through a range of specific courses, academic programs, and learning experiences.
  • It's a roadmap describing the landscape of a field, program, or specialization.
  • Pathways are made of steps that represent requirements, competencies, or other "real-world" experiences and take the form of a hierarchy of nested steps.
