Creating Group Sets

For an overview of all types of group activities, please visit the Overview page.

To create groups and assign students to them, you will first need to create Group Sets. If you plan to use the same groups throughout the entire term, you can create one group set and the appropriate number of groups within that set. If you plan to assign students to different groups for different assignments, you will create multiple group sets and then the appropriate number of groups in each set. For instance, you may want students to work together in groups on discussions, but different groups of students work together on a final project. In this case, you will create two group sets.

Step 1

Select People on the left navigation menu of your course.

Step 2

Select + Group Set on the right of this page.

Step 3

Give the group set a name that includes the course prefix, term, and name of the assignment (i.e., MGMT 371 May 2023 Final Project).

For the group structure, you have 3 options:

  • Create groups later (Manual)
  • Split students by number of groups
  • Split number of students per group
Select the option you find best and select Save.

Step 4

If you have chosen to have the system create groups for you, you will see each group name and will be able to select a group name to determine which students are in the group, as in the example below.

If you have chosen to manually assign students to groups, move on to Create student groups.
